Molecule that inhibits estrogen, key risk factor for endometrial, breast cancer found

Washington: Researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University have discovered a molecule that could lead to new therapies for preventing and treating endometrial and breast cancer and other estrogen-related diseases in humans.
The molecule, discovered in animal studies, inhibits the action of estrogen.
This female hormone plays a key role in the growth, maintenance and repair of reproductive tissues, and fuels the development of endometrial and breast cancers.
The hormones estradiol (the most important form of estrogen) and progesterone prepare the uterus for pregnancy. They trigger a series of cell proliferation and cell differentiation events that prepare the uterine lining (endometrium) for implantation of a fertilized egg.
Although this process is tightly controlled, uterine cells sometimes proliferate abnormally, leading to menstrual irregularities, endometrial polyps, endometriosis, or endometrial cancer – the most common female genital tract malignancy, causing six percent of cancer deaths among women in the U. S. and a higher proportion worldwide.
“The molecular mechanisms that underlie these pathologies are still obscure – and so are the mechanisms involved in normal hormonal regulation of cell proliferation in the endometrium, which is essential for successful pregnancy,” ANI quoted a lead author Jeffrey Pollard, Ph. D., professor of developmental and molecular biology and of obstetrics and gynecology and women’s health at Einstein.
He also holds the Louis Goldstein Swan Chair in Women’s Cancer Research and is the deputy director of the Albert Einstein Cancer Center.
In studies involving rodents, Dr. Pollard discovered that a molecule called KLF15 (Kruppel-like transcription factor-15) controls the actions of estradiol and progesterone in the endometrium by inhibiting the production MCM2, a protein involved in DNA synthesis.
“Our findings raise the possibility that it may be feasible to prevent or treat endometrial and breast cancer and other diseases related to estrogen by promoting the action of KLF15,” said Dr. Pollard.
The findings were published online last month in the PNAS Plus.

Why women can’t quit smoking???

Washington: Women tend to find it harder to quit smoking than men because their brains respond differently to nicotine, say researchers.
When a person smokes, the number of nicotine receptors in the brain – which bind to nicotine and reinforce the habit of smoking – are thought to increase in number.
A new study found this is true in men – male smokers had a greater number of nicotine receptors compared to male non-smokers. But surprisingly, women smokers had about the same number of nicotine receptors as non-smokers.
“When you look at it by gender, you see this big difference,” Fox News quoted study researcher Kelly Cosgrove, an assistant professor of psychiatry at Yale University School of Medicine, as saying.
The study suggests women smokers may benefit more from other types of treatment that don’t involve nicotine, including behavioural therapies, such as exercise or relaxation techniques, and non-nicotine containing medications, Cosgrove said.
Cosgrove and colleagues scanned the brains of 52 men and 58 women, about half of whom were smokers.
Smokers in the study had abstained from smoking for a week so that their nicotine receptors would be free to bind to the marker used for imaging.
The researchers found that male smokers had about 16 percent more nicotine receptors in an area of their brain known as the striatum, 17 percent more in the cerebellum, and 13 to 17 percent more in the cortical region, or outside layer, of the brain compared with male non-smokers. Female smokers, on the other hand, had similar numbers of nicotine receptors in these brain regions.
The study has been published in the April issue of Archives of General Psychiatry.

10 points I hate about simple girls

1.    Their perfect genes. While I have to put four layers of foundation, three coats of eyeliner, smear red lipstick and don dominatrix heels to make myself appear human, the simple girl will daintily walk in with not even a speck of makeup, wearing a crescent white shalwar kurta paired with flats and still get everyone’s attention.
2.    Their simple minds. While I pose thought-provoking questions about war and suicide bombings on my Facebook profile, the simpleton will say something as inane as, “I love my cat” and get 500 likes in a matter of seconds.
3.    The lack of emotional baggage. Simple girls hardly ever get manic depressive, aggressive, angry, suicidal or anxious. Have you heard any simple girl go through a messy breakup, an identity crises, a divorce or even a bad haircut?
4.    How they’re constantly serenaded by Lollywood, Bollywood and Hollywood! Case in point: “Bholi si surat”! Shahrukh Khan will never sing a song titled “Chalaak si madeup surat”!
5.    Their ability to find Mr Right before they even hit puberty — leaving us grappling with Mr Wrongs, stumbling into Mr Absolutely Incorrects and bumping time and again into thousands of Mr What a Horrible Mistake!
6.    The rishtas they get at every lunch, shaadi and dinner. . . they’ll even get a rishta on their way to the grocery store. How easily they win the praise of sasu maas around the world, friend’s parents, and even your own parents without having a single accomplishment under their belt is beyond my understanding!
7.    Their disdain for us. Simple girls will only befriend simple girls and treat the non-simple girl as the pariah.
8.    Their supernatural ability to have perfect hair despite the high humidity, walk gracefully without ever tripping on their face, have their clothes free of wrinkles all the time — and the sheer power of never dropping gravy on their white joras.
9.    The ridiculously perfect body image. While I fall victim to every trend, fad and diet, they’re happy with themselves just the way they are: not two inches slimmer, not one inch bigger!
10.   The ability to age gracefully. While we end up looking like the surgically enhanced and messed up carcass of Joan Rivers, they end up looking twenty years younger than their actual age. Yes, Mahnoor Baloch — I’m talking about you!

US woman drinks petrol

Washington: Usually people around the world like to drink different juices but there is a US woman who is addicted to drink petrol.
Shannon, set to appear on the aptly named TV show My Strange Addiction, claims to drink up to 12 teaspoons of petrol per day.
“It tingles at first and then it burns the back of my throat,” the US woman told TV channel TLC. “Even though it hurts me, it makes me feel good.”
According to TLC, Shannon whose preferred method of drinking petrol is straight out of the canister, has consumed over 18 litres in the last year.
“I take the cap off and breathe in the fumes that come forcing out of the can,” she said.
Shannon’s mother said at first she didn’t believe her daughter was addicted to petrol, but then she smelled it in her breath.

Highlight violence but not for award

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy caused to bring Oscar first time in the country’s history yet masses have become confused about the glory significantly highlighted by media.
No doubt Oscar Award is a big achievement and considered as highest recognition at international level and people aware of such events are very much happy and lauded Sharmeen but a section of Pakistanis, at the same time, think the more such issues should be highlighted without any sake of reputation.
I don’t know about ”Saving Face” and its topic/message, but this Oscar winning will be considered as an advancement of liberalism and secularism in Pakistani society, our media will support it and more such activities will be encouraged.

I am sure more than half of Pakistan doesn’t even know what the Oscars are because of widespread ignorance of our society. This movie will not improve the issue highlighted here but caused to passage of bill in the parliament, which might be effective in the society.
The issue of violence against women needs to be highlighted properly. There are some question raised in the mind that someone should also make movie on Dr, Affia Siddique and atrocities she has been facing for long period.
Someone should also highlight the woman like Waheeda Shah, a PPP MPA, who physically roughed up presiding officer in by elections. Someone should also raise issues like child marriage, veeni and karo kari, which has been witnessed in the areas of powerful feudal and political leaders of the country.

Joints Muscles Pain Smoker Women's of Pakistan

Causes of Joint Pain in Women

Of the nearly 27 million Americans with osteoarthritis (AO), 60 percent are women. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), an autoimmune disease, strikes approximately three times more women than men. Other autoimmune conditions that cause joint pain, such as lupus, scleroderma, and multiple sclerosis (MS), also hit women harder than men: Women are nine times more likely to develop lupus, three times more likely to have scleroderma, and twice as likely to suffer from MS. And fibromyalgia, a little understood condition that can cause joint pain, affects women eight times more frequently than men.
